Proper and careful care of the piercing should not be dispensed with - the following article explains how this should be designed.

The importance of careful piercing care

Those who are thinking about finally getting their first piercing should think about how to care for their new piece of jewelry in advance. The location of the piercing is hardly relevant in the general care guidelines. However, some parts of the body can be identified that are particularly sensitive and therefore more at risk of complications. However, the basic rule is always that the piercing of a piercing is an intervention in the organism, which is accompanied by a wound.

The piercing site in the skin does not form a scab, such as abrasions or cuts. In order to prevent the puncture site from closing again, it is necessary to wear the piece of jewelery continuously right from the start. However, this also means that the wound remains open for a certain period of time and there is therefore a general risk of various pathogens, bacteria and germs settling in. The necessary protection then provides a careful piercing care

This protection is particularly important in the initial period after the piercing, in order to support the formation of a protective layer of skin in the piercing canal - this is also known as erithelization. However, piercing lovers should also know that too intensive care can also cause damage.

The correct handling of the fresh piercing

The piercing should be left to rest completely on the first day after the piercing. From the second day onwards, comprehensive piercing care must be carried out until the wound has completely healed.

For example, the general rule that should be taken into account is that touching the piercing should be avoided as far as possible - ideally it should only be touched with previously disinfected hands for the purpose of cleaning. Swimming, bathing, visiting the solarium or sauna are also not permitted. In the course of washing or showering, the piercing must be protected comprehensively.

If the new piercing jewelry is in the area of the head, hair dye should also be avoided. Soaps or decorative cosmetics must also not be used on fresh facial piercings.

Basically, excessive physical strain and stress should be avoided. Ideally, attention is also paid to adequate sleep and a balanced diet. Alcohol, nicotine or other drugs should be avoided. Instead, ensure adequate fluid intake, such as herbal teas or water. Caution is also required when it comes to close physical contact or the exchange of bodily fluids, because the piercing must be protected as best as possible from pressure or friction - especially at night while sleeping.

It may be useful to cool the piercing. As already mentioned, the piercing jewelry cannot be removed. Blood-thinning medication, such as aspirin, is not recommended in the first few days after the sting. Other medication must be taken, and the doctor should be consulted in advance.

Complications with the piercing - this is how to act

Even if the piercing is generally properly cared for, it can still cause problems. However, if a piercing is freshly pricked, some reactions can be considered completely normal, for example swelling at the puncture site. In addition, there is also leakage of wound fluid. However, should this turn into pus, this is a serious warning sign. Often the piercing also itches and hurts slightly, but this is not a sign of poor piercing care. Slight secondary bleeding also occurs in some cases.

However, if the burning at the puncture site gets the upper hand and a rash forms, this can definitely be considered a complication. The same applies if healing does not progress any further, but instead pus and excessive wetness form. However, you should never panic. Instead, the respective piercing studio should be visited to receive tips on how to proceed. In many cases it is already helpful to change the cleaning products for the care of the piercing if, for example, allergic reactions are shown to the original agent.

However, if the situation does not improve and the problems with the fresh piercing increase, it is essential to see a doctor. However, this only happens in the rarest of cases, because – provided the right care is taken – a piercing poses only a very small health risk.

The care of special piercing sites

There are quite a few piercings that require a special approach in terms of their care - this applies in particular to piercings in the cartilage, such as helix piercings, but also navel and navel piercings Nose piercings. In these cases, hair color, make-up, powder and creams should not be used during the healing process.

Piercings located in the mouth area, such as lip or lip piercings, also require special care tongue piercings. The mouth must be properly rinsed out after each meal, and no extremely hot, cold or spicy drinks and food should be consumed. Smoking should also be strictly avoided during the healing process, and the exchange of bodily fluids is also taboo.

Strict care guidelines must also be observed for piercings in the intimate area. Sexual activity should be avoided until the piercing has healed completely, and loose, comfortable clothing should be worn. It is important that the underwear is breathable - ideally, products made of cotton should be worn, because synthetic materials are not suitable for a freshly pierced intimate piercing.
