The 5 common piercing myths and the truth behind them
Piercings have been an integral part of many cultures for centuries. But there are many myths surrounding piercings that often persist. Here we clear up five of these myths and clarify the truth behind them:
-
Myth: Piercings always hurt. Truth: The sensation of pain varies greatly depending on the person and the location. Many people report a short, stabbing pain that quickly subsides. So: It's not that bad! :-)
-
Myth: Piercings always heal without problems. Truth: Fortunately, most people don't have any major problems with their piercings - especially once the piercing channel has fully healed. However, if the piercing hasn't fully healed yet or if it's in a difficult spot (it's often touched, you lie on it while sleeping, etc.), infections can occur. Good care is therefore crucial.
-
Myth: Piercings cannot be removed by yourself once they have been pierced. Truth: Piercings can be easily removed at any time (often even by you, but in more difficult cases always by your piercer). Please note, however, that the hole can close after removal, especially in fresh piercings. In one of our other blog articles we will tell you more about the topic.
-
Myth: Piercings heal faster if you rotate them frequently. Truth: Quite the opposite! Twisting the piercing can hinder healing and lead to infections, as you are constantly irritating the healing wound with the twisting. So listen carefully to what your piercer tells you. A slight movement may help to clean your piercing, but otherwise it is best not to touch it.
-
Myth: Piercings always cause scars. Truth: Scarring depends heavily on care and the healing process. With good care and small piercing jewelry, the risk can be minimized. However, especially in the face, you should be prepared for the fact that the hole may always be slightly visible.
We hope that we have been able to dispel some myths about piercings and that this article will help your piercing heal quickly and completely and avoid becoming infected.
